Happy birthday Ms. Thomas and Mr. President!

Barack Obama is celebrating his first birthday as president today, but he came into the White House briefing room to present cupcakes to Helen Thomas. The veteran reporter, who turns 89(!) today, has covered every president since John F. Kennedy. Thomas is a feminist trailblazer. She was the only female reporter to travel with President Nixon to China, the first woman officer of the National Press Club and the White House Correspondents Association, and the first female member and president of the Gridiron Club. At 89 she still asks the most pointed questions of anyone in the press corps.
