Travel Stipends Available for CLPP Conference!

Attention activists: Travel and hotel stipends are available for the annual Civil Liberties and Public Policy conference, "From Abortion Rights to Social Justice: Building the Movement for Reproductive Freedom," April 9-11, 2010 at Hampshire College, Amherst MA!

On April 9-11, 2010, campus and community activists will gather at Hampshire College to unite for reproductive justice. We offer more than 40 workshops and trainings. Conference speakers address reproductive freedom as it relates to a broad range of social justice initiatives including economic justice, health care reform, racial equality, freedom from violence, immigrant rights, climate justice, and LGBTQ rights, just to name a few.

Stipend priority will be given to people who:
-Would not be able to attend otherwise.
-Are from communities that are often pushed to the margins and/or who encounter barriers to working in the reproductive rights movement.
-Are first time participants.
We strive for as large a diversity of travel stipend recipients as possible.

Raffle results - free Ms. membership!

Val and I raffled a free year's membership to Ms. Magazine at the aforementioned CLPP conference last weekend. We're proud to announce Jeanne from Hampshire College was the winner! We've let Jeanne know, so she should receive our new spring issue in a few weeks.

Ms. is the oldest, largest, independent feminist publication in the country. Gloria Steinem started the magazine in 1972, and FMF is now the publisher for Ms. The magazine covers politics, current events, arts, and pop culture from a feminist lens, and we don't accept any corporate ads.

A year's membership is ordinarily $25, or $12.50 for students in campus feminist organizations. Want to sign up at the $12.50 rate? Contact campusteam@feminist.org and we can hook you up.

On the Road Again...MA Version

Val and Danielle had a great time tabling at the Hampshire College Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program's annual conference this weekend. The conference, held in Amherst, Massachusetts, brought together 1000 activists from around the globe to organize around reproductive rights and health.

The theme of the conference is "From Abortion Rights to Social Justice: Building the Movement for Reproductive Freedom," so we looked forward to participating and knew we'd meet a lot of great feminists. This was our first CLPP conference and we weren't disappointed.

After running into other DC activists at National Airport, we flew into Hartford CT and drove north to Amherst. After a quick tour of Amherst, we got to campus and set up our table. We had our Campaign to Expose Fake Clinics info, domestic and global repro rights fact sheets, free copies of Ms. Magazine, and candy on the table. We also sold our totes and buttons that say "This is what a FEMINIST looks like."

Sidenote - for anyone who didn't get a tote bag or wanted a feminist t-shirt, you can get them at our online store. Our totes and tees are sweat-free and union-made, and they make a great gift!

We met feminist students from all over the country - Oklahoma State, Wellesley, UPenn, UConn, CUNY Hunter College, and of course Hampshire College, and dozens of other schools besides. They told us they had a great experience and were motivated to keep organizing their campuses around repro justice.

The Saturday opening plenary session had several terrific speakers lined up. They implored the audience to keep working for human rights and social/reproductive justice here and abroad.

Lyndon and Doris sold merch next to us, and they were a hoot. There were so many terrific organizations, including the Midwest Access Project, Feminist Abortion Network, and NARAL Pro-Choice New York.

We tabled Friday and Saturday, then came home Sunday. We had a great time, and would love to hear from folks who went to the conference as well. Email us at campusteam@feminist.org with stories and pictures from the conference!
