Campus Organizers meet Gloria Steinem

So the east coast organizers went downtown for the Women, Money, and Power Summit Luncheon, sponsored by our sister organization, the Feminist Majority. The luncheon was great, and it was great to hear Gloria Steinem speak. She had a lot to say about gun ownership and violence in society, and we really enjoyed her analysis - thanks so much to FM and to Gloria for a great luncheon!

Additionally, we were super stoked to get a photo with her following her speech! So here it is, your 5 east coast campus organizers with the one and only Gloria Steinem!

Special kudos to Norma Gattsek, Government Relations Director, for snagging us the opportunity and taking the photo. Thanks Norma!

Finding Feminists in South Carolina

Today, Tania and I embarked upon our first foray of visits into South Carolina. We hit up a few schools in Spartanburg - Converse College and Wofford College. We had some great meetings with enthusiastic faculty lined up, and we packed our bags with some extra information about our upcoming Women of Color Conference and campus program - just in case.

Part of our job as organizers is to root around and dig up the feminists that we know are out there - the question is, where do we find them? I wish I could tell you tales of glory, filled with triumphant marches across campus followed by masses of "This is what a FEMINIST looks like" tshirt wearers. You know, wherein we sweep into a campus and find those fiery personalities ready to revolutionize the politics of their communities forever...!

Unfortunately, rarely is our job this glorious, or that easy. Most of the time, our organizing involves endless online research, countless phone calls, and ongoing email conversations. Sometimes the most frustrating thing is that we continually put ourselves out there, and we don't always see any result.

But I have to say, being on the ground makes all the difference. Knocking on doors, meeting people, engaging in conversation, and working with the individual vibe of every campus is easily the best part of our job! It makes the piles of prep work, not to mention the getting lost, long days, and hours of driving well worth it.

This was proved for us today. After we finished our scheduled visits at Converse, we decided to poke around and drop in on other friendly departments. Heck, we're trying to get folks out to Atlanta for the conference (hint hint, if you haven't registered yet, brighten our day and do so now?? pretty please?) and we were hoping to launch a feminist group on Converse's campus. We figured we had nothing to lose!

So after dropping some materials off at the English department, we found the History and Politics department located on the same floor. There was only one door in the department partially open. The professor welcomed us into her office and as Tania was explaining the campus program, conference, and what we were trying to do at Converse, I started to look at the floor-to-ceiling bookcases. Titles like: Women in the New Deal. The Creation of Patriarchy. A Feminist History. Feminism and Domesticity. A bumper sticker: "Women belong in the House. And the Senate. And the Oval Office."

Hark! Could it be? A feminist! "It looks like we're in good company!" I said.

We lucked out. Tucked away in a corner of this academic building was a treasure trove of feminism! The professor was more than happy to help us spread the word about the conference, and was totally stoked at the idea of a feminist activist group getting started on campus. Just like that, we made an invaluable contact with someone who we couldn't have found, had we not stumbled into her office and had the guts to just say "Hi, Professor. We're here from the Feminist Majority Foundation, and we wanted to speak with you about some upcoming opportunities for Converse students and faculty...do you have just a minute to talk with us?"

Moral of the story: There are feminists everywhere. You just have to get out there and find them!

Calling all Southern feminists!

Happy Wednesday, Feminist Blogosphere Friends!

Just wanted to drop a quick note to let you all know that in conjunction with planning our upcoming Women of Color Conference this October, a few of us campus organizers are also hitting the road!

Tania and I are going to be headed down south - we're leaving DC this weekend and will be sweeping through South Carolina and North Carolina next week, and then spending the following week in Georgia. We're going to be traveling around to area schools to do outreach for the conference and meet with some of our super feminist friends on campuses, like the Women's Studies Student Organization at the University of Georgia and our conference co-hosts, Spelman College's Women's Research and Resource Center and FMLA!

We are super excited to be headed that way, but we know that there could be some great feminists in those parts that have somehow eluded our grasp! Do you go to school in GA, SC, or NC? Or do you know someone who does? Let us know! We'd love to get in touch and arrange to meet up! Drop us a line at campusteam@feminist.org, and we'll be in touch!

Dr. George Tiller Speaks: Reproductive Freedom, Women's Right to Decide, and a Vision for a Better World

"We have given war, pestilence, hate, greed, judgment, ego, self-sufficiency a good try, and have failed. We need a new paradigm that consists of kindness, courtesy, justice, love, and respect in all our relationships."
- Dr. George Tiller, March 2008

The last few weeks have been rough for a lot of us in the progressive movement. Violence, hatred, and anger seem to abound in the world, and it is easy to get frustrated amid the fray.

As a student in March 2008, I attended the National Young Women's Leadership Conference sponsored by FMF. At the conference Dr. Tiller spoke about his experiences as a late abortion provider, his hopes for the future, and reproductive freedoms.

We've uploaded some clips from his speech below:

This man worked tirelessly to provide women in impossible situations with options. He suffered through legal and physical attacks, and risked his life every day to keep coming back. If anyone had reason to get frustrated and angry, he did. What is most poignant to me is that he didn't succumb to that hatred; instead, he kept alive a vision of a better world, and worked toward that world each and every day.

I think we all could learn a lesson from Dr. Tiller's words - I know I have.

On the Road Again...MA Version

Val and Danielle had a great time tabling at the Hampshire College Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program's annual conference this weekend. The conference, held in Amherst, Massachusetts, brought together 1000 activists from around the globe to organize around reproductive rights and health.

The theme of the conference is "From Abortion Rights to Social Justice: Building the Movement for Reproductive Freedom," so we looked forward to participating and knew we'd meet a lot of great feminists. This was our first CLPP conference and we weren't disappointed.

After running into other DC activists at National Airport, we flew into Hartford CT and drove north to Amherst. After a quick tour of Amherst, we got to campus and set up our table. We had our Campaign to Expose Fake Clinics info, domestic and global repro rights fact sheets, free copies of Ms. Magazine, and candy on the table. We also sold our totes and buttons that say "This is what a FEMINIST looks like."

Sidenote - for anyone who didn't get a tote bag or wanted a feminist t-shirt, you can get them at our online store. Our totes and tees are sweat-free and union-made, and they make a great gift!

We met feminist students from all over the country - Oklahoma State, Wellesley, UPenn, UConn, CUNY Hunter College, and of course Hampshire College, and dozens of other schools besides. They told us they had a great experience and were motivated to keep organizing their campuses around repro justice.

The Saturday opening plenary session had several terrific speakers lined up. They implored the audience to keep working for human rights and social/reproductive justice here and abroad.

Lyndon and Doris sold merch next to us, and they were a hoot. There were so many terrific organizations, including the Midwest Access Project, Feminist Abortion Network, and NARAL Pro-Choice New York.

We tabled Friday and Saturday, then came home Sunday. We had a great time, and would love to hear from folks who went to the conference as well. Email us at campusteam@feminist.org with stories and pictures from the conference!

A successful end to the 2009 NYWLC

Our 2009 National Young Women’s Leadership Conference has come to an end and in the words of one of our great participants, “the only thing that I am upset about is that it is over.”

The two-day conference was filled with some of our country’s leading feminist voices of all generations and backgrounds and ended on a high note. As student activists filed out of the last plenary session, there were many great discussions about what needed to be done next. The energy was high and everyone seemed fired up and ready to go bring what was discussed at the conference back to their campuses.
