13-year old Kavya Shivashankar WinsNational Spelling Bee!

Congratulations to Kavya Shivashankar who beat 293 participants of the National Spelling Bee to earn the first place title!

In case you're wondering, the final word Kavya had to spell: L-A-O-D-I-C-E-A-N, laodicean.  (If you're like me and curious as to what the heck that means...laodicean is an adjective meaning "lukewarm or indifferent, esp. in religion, as were the early Christians of Laodicea.")

And, as if winning the National Spelling Bee in front of Dr. Jill Biden (spouse of the VP Joe Biden), Olympic gold meadalist Shawn Johnson, and millions of TV viewers wasn't enough already, Kavya has even greater aspirations.  While she still needs to make her way through the rest of middle school and high school, Kavya has her sights set on becoming neurosurgeon.

All I can say is GOOD LUCK, KAVYA!  If your dedication and determination shown in the spelling bee tells us anything, I'm thinking we'll see you in the OR very soon!  =-)
