Happy 37th Birthday Title IX!!

You may be saying to yourself, "That is great! ...but what is Title IX?" In short, it calls for gender equity in federally funded education programs and athletics. It is a pretty huge deal for anyone who cares about gender equity, as all good citizens should.

According to the Representative Linda Sanchez from California, "Before the law passed in 1972, girls made up only 7 percent of high school sports participants. Now, more than 40 percent of high school athletes are female... Today, well over half of all undergraduate college students are women -- and women outnumber men in graduate school enrollment, including high-paying, high-powered professional programs like law." (Check out my pal Bonnie's blog post about feminist law!)

I am pretty excited about the strides toward equality that we have made, but still very aware of the challenges that remain. It is worth checking out the comment section under Rep. Sanchez's article to see exactly why we must continue to work toward equality, as there are some pretty interesting notions about equality and biological "differences." Alas, another blog post for another day... Happy Birthday Title IX!
