When Freesia Jakson, a straight-A, varsity athlete at Oakton High School (in Fairfax, VA...about a 30-minute drive from FMF's DC office) got caught taking her birth control pill in the school cafeteria, she was suspended for 10 days!
Stephen Colbert certainly offers a unique perspective of Freesia's story, but the bottom line is, are we really going to start punishing smart, pro-active young women for taking birth control?!

Should she have been suspended? Should the school take a second look at its policies? What do you think?

Oh my gosh. First off, that video was hilarious. Secondly, that is really sad. I really don't think schools should demonize young women who are being responsible..... Unless I was misinformed, I thought schools were a place to help kids learn and mature. Besides, there are lots of reasons why women take birth control.
I actually wrote about this video this morning (http://youngfeministadventures.blogspot.com/2009/08/im-materna-smack-junkie.html)
First off, I love how Colbert handled it, being sarcastic and pointing out the ridiculousness of the situation.
Second, really? Suspended for birth control? It's definitely an example of abstinence-only education (or at least the mindset of it) at it's best and a strange form of slut-shaming.
I definitely think this school needs to reexamine its policies.
