Gazan Doctor Seeks to Improve Lives of Girls

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Gazan doctor and peace activist lost three daughters and his niece to an Israeli bomb in January. Dr. Abuelaish had sought to bridge the gap between Gazans and Israelis by working with Israeli doctors and preaching non-violence.

This tragedy no doubt tested the doctor's humanitarian beliefs. However, Dr. Abuelaish's dedication to peace held strong.

In the name of his daughters and niece, Dr. Abuelaish has begun to establish a foundation that will empower Palestinian girls through education and provide them with health care. He believes that it is time for women to take the lead. Educated women, he says, will elevate society and lead us towards peace.

His ability to turn personal loss into opportunity for women and girls in his community is an inspiration and an example of the type of strength that makes the world a better place.
